How to Treat Panda Eyes

Panda eyes or dark circles around the eyes are disturbing appearance. For most people, especially women, having panda eyes can lower self-confidence.

Panda eyes appear due to several factors, one of which is lifestyle. This complaint can arise due to lack of sleep to stare at the screen too often.

Here are some ways you can do to deal with panda eyes:
1. Get enough sleep
A 2017 study published in the Royal Society Open Science examined the effects of sleep deprivation on appearance.

The study found that people who slept four hours had more visible dark circles under the eyes when compared to those who slept for eight hours.

“Lack of sleep can contribute to darker blood vessels as well as fluid buildup under the eyes that produces dark shadows,” says Karly O’Keefe, beautician and owner of facial treatment center, SkincraftLA in Los Angeles.

Lack of sleep can also increase stress, which can worsen dark circles.

2. Cold compress
Cold compresses can help reduce swelling and shrink dilated blood vessels.

If these blood vessels are under the eye, it can reduce the appearance of panda eyes, says Michele Green, MD, a cosmetic dermatologist who runs her own practice in New York City.

To try it at home, wrap a few ice cubes in a clean washcloth, then apply the washcloth to your eyes for three to five minutes.

You can also wet a washcloth with cold water and place it on the skin under the eyes using gentle pressure for about 20 minutes. Or use an eye gel mask that can be left in the freezer until ready to use. Apply for 10 minutes.

3. Use tea bags
Cold tea bags can also help with inflammation, says O’Keefe. This is because tea contains caffeine and antioxidants that help shrink blood vessels, stimulate blood circulation, and reduce swelling.

To try this method, put an old tea bag in the fridge for about 10 minutes, then apply it to your eyes for 30 minutes. O’Keefe recommends green tea because its caffeine content constricts the capillaries and blood vessels under the eyes which tightens the skin.

4. Use cucumber
Cucumber contains vitamin K which can reduce dark circles under the eyes by strengthening the walls of blood vessels. This makes the blood vessels less visible under the thinner skin. While cucumbers may not completely get rid of dark circles, they can help disguise them, says Green.

This method should be done in a medical spa after consulting a dermatologist. Side effects may include swelling or irritation for a few days after treatment.
